Stellenbosch was originally known as Wildebosch. While riding through the Wildebosch in 1679 Simon van der Stel noticed that it was ideal for grapes. He decided to rename the valley Stellenbosch, meaning "van der Stel's forest". Stellenbosch is the second-oldest European town in South Africa, and is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, near Cape Town. The area remains central to Cape Town's wine industry.
