Langa, a suburb of Cape Town

Langa is a suburb of Cape Town which was established in 1927. The name "Langa" is a shortening of "Langalibalele", the name of a rebel Hlubi chief who lived there after his release from Robben Island in 1875. The Black Mamba Youth movement was established in Langa in 1972. In 1976, the students' uprising began with a march from Langa High School to Sobukwe Square, returning to Mendi Square.
