Bellville is situated about 20km from Cape Town's city centre, and was orginally a resting place called "Twelfth Mile" on the Cape Town/Stellenbosch Route. The loose, Cape Flats sand made the going tough for those pulling wagons, and the relief of riders on reaching the twelfth milestone gave it a special significance.
In 1861 "Twelth Mile" was renamed Bellville, after the surveyor general of the Cape Colony, Charles Davidson Bell. In 1979 Bellville acquired full city status and in May 1996 it was incorporated into the Tygerberg municipal area.
