South African Navy

With the recent (controversial) order and delivery of frigates and submarines, the South African Navy has more reach and firepower than it has ever had in its history (oddly enough in a time of peace). The South African navy is the sole navy in sub-Saharan Africa which could be considered seriously.

Submarines

On the 7th April 2006 the first of South Africa's 3 new German-manufactured submarines sailed into Simonstown (on the South Peninsula of Cape Town). Two more submarines will be delivered into service by the end of 2007. South Africa's submarines are type 209's, and can remain underwater for about a week (depending on speed). They have 4 diesel engines which are used for power on the surface and to recharge the batteries. The submarines have 8 torpedo tubes (which can be retrofitted to fire missiles).

Frigates

Frigates are general purpose warships that can be armed with guided missiles. South Africa recently (April 2006) has taken delivery of four frigates.
