Dias Tavern restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa

Review: 19 July 2006 [This review written by the Dry Vegeterian]

It was already dark by 1845, when we wound our way to Dias Tavern to meet up with our Portuguese friends. As we approached Dias Tavern in the dimly-lit Caledon Street I stopped the car to take a photo. My wife cautioned me that this was not a safe place to park the car, and we moved into the parking lot across the road from Dias Tavern. There was a person stationed outside the Tavern looking after the cars.

As we walked up the stairs we saw paintings of Dias and the types of ships they sailed in those days. The restaurant is divided into 2 parts (literally, by one of those perspex walls which are meant to prevent the smoke drifting from the smokers area to the non-smokers area). The part of the restaurant in the smoking area doubles as a bar. We chose to sit in the non-smoking area (the smokers in our party made regular trips to the smoking area).

The restaurant is far from up-market, and you should expect to rough it in red-plastic chairs and plastic covered booths seats.

Before our meal we were brough rolls - no need to put margarine on them, there already was margarine on them! (if you don't like margarine - tough!). I ordered a Greek salad for starters, which was had a bit too much lettuce and too little Greek in it. Very popular amongst our crowd of regulars was the squid, which consisted of lots of little wriggly creatures which everybody seemed to enjoy (most of them had it as starters, but one had it as a main course). My wife had a garlic roll for starters, which she described as fine (not the best she's had but certainly not the worst). I had the vegeterian lasagne for a main course, which was filled with baby marrows - not the worst I'd had, but this is certainly not a venue for vegeterians (either the vegeterian lasagne or the vegeterian platter). Another in our party had the sword-fish for a main course, which he enjoyed. My wife had a prego roll for the main course, which she thought was untasty and mediocre.

As we rounded the corner from Dias Tavern on our way home we saw a lady squatting on the side-walk doing her business! Nothing to do with the establishment, but rather the area it's located in.

Overall, a good place to go if you like sea-food and want to go for a bash-up meal with lots of drinks - do NOT go here with somebody you are trying to impress.
