To the eastern side of Cape Town city centre lies an area known as the Cape Flats. Many years ago the Cape Flats lay underneath the ocean. The sandy dunes of the Cape Flats proved to be an obstacle to exploring outside the Cape. During the 1840s Port Jackson trees were imported from Australia and planted in the Cape Flats, in an attempt to stabilise the dunes. The Port Jacksons spread rapidly and are proving to be exceptionally difficult to remove.
A township tour often turn out to be the highlight of tourists' visits to Cape Town, providing insight into South Africa's history and cultural diversity (it is not recommended to go on your own).
